Why We Build with CLT: A Smarter Way to Build Homes in Australia

At ArborHaus, we believe the homes of the future should be healthier, more comfortable, more energy efficient, and better for the environment. That's why we build using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT).

While CLT has been used successfully throughout Europe for decades, it is still relatively new in Australia. Once people understand how it works and experience the benefits for themselves, it's easy to see why it's becoming one of the most exciting developments in modern construction.

What is CLT?

Cross Laminated Timber, or CLT, is a large solid timber panel made by layering structural timber boards at right angles and bonding them together under pressure.

The result is an incredibly strong and stable building material that can be used for walls, floors and roofs.

Think of it as a giant engineered timber panel that replaces traditional timber framing, brickwork and many structural steel components.

A More Comfortable Home

One of the biggest benefits of CLT is how it helps create a home that feels comfortable year-round.

Unlike conventional construction, where numerous materials and gaps can create weak points in the building envelope, CLT provides a continuous solid structure that is much easier to make airtight.

When combined with high-performance insulation, quality windows and controlled ventilation, a CLT home can maintain a remarkably stable indoor temperature throughout the year.

The result is less reliance on heating and cooling, lower energy bills and a home that simply feels better to live in.

BenefitWhat It Means for Homeowners
Stable indoor temperaturesGreater comfort throughout the year
Airtight constructionFewer drafts and cold spots
Reduced energy consumptionLower heating and cooling costs
Controlled ventilationFresh filtered air year-round
Improved acoustic performanceQuieter indoor environment

Natural Materials Create Healthier Spaces

Most Australians spend around 90% of their time indoors.

The materials we surround ourselves with matter.

CLT is made primarily from sustainably grown timber and creates warm, natural interiors that many people instantly connect with.

Studies have shown that exposed timber environments can help reduce stress levels, improve wellbeing and create a stronger connection to nature.

At ArborHaus, we often leave selected CLT surfaces exposed internally, allowing the natural beauty of the timber to become part of the finished design.

Sustainability Beyond the Finished Home

FeatureEnvironmental Benefit
Sustainably sourced timberRenewable building material
Carbon storageLocks carbon into the building structure
Precision manufacturingReduces material waste
Lightweight structureCan reduce transport and foundation impacts
Long service lifeDurable homes built for generations

Timber is one of the few major building materials that stores carbon rather than generating significant emissions during production.

As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and lock it away within the timber. When used in a building, that carbon remains stored for decades.

Beyond the environmental benefits of the material itself, CLT construction can significantly reduce waste on site.

Panels are manufactured to precise dimensions before arriving on site, reducing excess materials and unnecessary landfill.

On our Cardiff Heights project, we've even reused the timber supports that carried the CLT panels from Europe, transforming them into door jambs, architraves and other finishing details throughout the home.

Faster Construction with Greater Precision

Because CLT panels are manufactured off-site using computer-controlled machinery, they arrive ready for installation.

Openings for windows, doors and services can be accurately prepared before the panels reach site.

This allows construction to progress quickly while maintaining exceptional levels of precision.

The result is less waste, fewer surprises and a higher-quality finished product.

Built for Australian Conditions

A common question we hear is whether timber is suitable for Australian homes.

The answer is yes.

Modern CLT systems are engineered to meet Australian standards and can be designed for a wide range of conditions, including bushfire-prone areas, coastal environments and demanding structural applications.

When properly detailed and protected, CLT offers excellent durability and long-term performance.

The Future of Home Building

At ArborHaus, we don't see CLT as a niche product or a passing trend.

We see it as a smarter way to build.

By combining natural materials, high-performance building science and thoughtful design, we're creating homes that are more comfortable, more sustainable and better suited to the way people want to live.

Our goal isn't simply to build houses.

It's to create homes that perform exceptionally well for generations to come.
